My Spiritual Journey: From West Bengal to Delhi

Introduction

Namaste everyone! My name is Pushpa Goyal, and I am from New Delhi, India. I was born and brought up in a middle-class traditional business family in a remote area of West Bengal. My educational journey began in a government school there. After higher secondary, I used to travel 134 km daily for my graduation. I loved my journey, especially the window seat, where I could admire the tea gardens, paddy fields, big green trees, and small rivers along the way. It was during these travels that I developed a deep love for nature.

Moving to Delhi

After graduation, I moved to Delhi for higher studies. The transition was overwhelming—Delhi felt like a jungle of concrete, overpopulated and chaotic. I was scared and even struggled to cross the road due to the heavy traffic. To make matters worse, I didn’t speak English or Hindi fluently, as I had studied in a Bengali-medium school. However, as the saying goes, "Compulsion teaches all", and I gradually learned both languages. I completed a Diploma in Journalism and began preparing for civil services. Life seemed perfect—I was studying well, had good friends, and started to like the big city. But something was missing. There was an emptiness in my heart, and I didn’t know what I was seeking.

A Life-Changing Encounter

One day, while returning home from New Delhi, I was at the railway station searching for a book to read during my journey. A simple man approached me and offered a bundle of old magazines that looked like newspapers. I took the bundle, and soon my train departed. After an hour, I opened the bundle and started reading. I was so engrossed that I read every page for almost 10 hours. It felt like something inside me was breaking—my old belief system was crumbling. There was a strange pain and fear, but also a sense of something new being born within me. For the first time, I was reading OSHO’s literature, and every word shook me to my core.

The Turning Point

One chapter in particular stood out—it discussed the relationship between parents and children, explaining how Indian parents often blackmail their children in the name of love. This was a revelation for me. As the only girl in my family, I had always been over-pampered and believed my parents were the best. But after reading OSHO’s words, I decided to take a bold step. I told my parents that I didn’t want to marry and wanted to live life on my own terms. This decision shocked my father, and he stopped talking to me. OSHO’s words had turned out to be painfully true for me.

The Beginning of My Spiritual Journey

In 1995, I left my home and returned to Delhi. I met the man who had given me the bundle of magazines and told him I wanted to be with him. His shocked face is still etched in my memory. Since then, I have been with him, and my life has transformed completely. From 1995 to 2000, I underwent a profound change. I learned and practiced meditation, traveled to different places, and explored various therapies and healing techniques. This period marked the beginning of my spiritual journey.

Conclusion

My journey from West Bengal to Delhi was not just a physical move but a spiritual awakening. It taught me to break free from societal expectations and embrace my true self. Meditation and self-discovery became my guiding lights, helping me find the peace and fulfillment I had been seeking. If you’re on a similar path, remember that transformation often begins with a single step—sometimes, all it takes is a bundle of old magazines to change your life forever.
